Lax enforcement? Not under the OIG’s watch

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) recently criticized CMS’ lack of HIPAA security rule oversight, im-plementation, and enforcement and suggested changes were in order. And that means changes for covered entities. The OIG’s largely critical report (“Nationwide Re-view of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 Oversight” [A-04-07-05064]), issued October 27, describes the OIG’s findings and recommendations for CMS. However, it also sends a message to covered entities.
