Q. Does HIPAA prohibit nursing departments from keeping patient care flow sheets in closed folders in patient rooms?
HIM-HIPAA Insider, November 3, 2008
A. Flow sheets should contain the minimum necessary information because they may be accessible to visitors. For example, this practice is acceptable if the flow sheets document vital signs or other basic information but do not contain diagnostic information.
