Hanging decorations
Q: What does the Life Safety Code® (LSC) say for hanging decorations from the ceiling in a rural health clinic and hospital?
A: According to section 19.7.5.6 of the 2012 LSC, you may hang combustible decorations from the ceiling and walls and cover up to 20% of the surface, and you may increase that to 30% of the surface if the smoke compartment is protected with sprinklers. And you may cover up to 50% of the ceiling and wall surface in a patient room that has a capacity not exceeding four persons, provided the smoke compartment is protected with sprinklers. However, the ceiling-mounted decorations may not obstruct the spray pattern from a sprinkler.
