CMS is revising its State Operations Manual (SOM) for hospitals in one of the first significant overhauls in more than a year. But be aware that the changes are not fully online yet and more revisions are to come.

As those changes impact standards by the accrediting organizations (AO), expect revisions from those organizations to follow as well.

Released in December, the memo updating the interpretive guidelines for CMS surveyors includes most—but not all—of the new or revised Conditions of Participation (CoP) for discharge planning and burden reduction outlined in two final rules published in September.
