It's a broken record. No matter how many times the experts tell us how to avoid being hammered by The Joint Commission during a hospital survey, the same problems always seem to make the list of the top violations.
Published in the September issue of The Joint Commission's Perspectives, the list of the top five most challenging accreditation and certification requirements for the first half of 2019 is pretty much a repeat of recent years, with life safety (LS), infection control (IC), and environment of care (EC) violations topping the list for many hospitals.
Most eye-opening was the number of hospitals and critical care hospitals that were dinged for LS violations such as lacking fire suppression systems, fire safety equipment, testing requirements, and hazardous materials and waste handling.
