When accreditation organization (AO) surveyors show up for survey, people automatically become nervous. The reaction is natural. Over the years, the perception of an AO triennial survey has been one of examination and enforcement; surveyors are thought to be stubborn old codgers who are inflexible and unwilling to listen to reason. However, these perceptions should mostly be a thing of the past. With all of the AOs now being under the auspices of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the AOs have changed its focus during surveys to serve more as a consultant than an enforcer. Yes, the surveyors are there to find issues where you do not comply with the standards, but isn’t that a good thing?
