As part of the first day’s review of documents, be prepared to show surveyors the results of your latest culture of safety assessment. Don’t have one? Start working on it now. If the data is old, use what you have and show how you’re updating it.
The Joint Commission (TJC) announced in the June issue of its Perspectives newsletter that it will be increasing focus on hospitals’ efforts to create and improve a culture of safety with new expectations during survey, starting on the first day.
TJC is not changing standards or requirements, but it is changing how surveyors will evaluate hospital leadership’s attention to safety.
Hospitals must now include the results of leadership’s latest evaluation of safety and quality, in addition to the documents required as outlined in TJC’s Survey Activity Guide, on the first day of survey—before the opening conference if possible, according to Perspectives.
