The American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE), looking to potentially prompt code changes that would cut down on what some facilities professionals consider busy work, is seeking input regarding monthly elevator-recall testing and exit-sign inspections.

For example, ASHE wonders if elevator-recall testing can safely be done every quarter—or maybe even only once or twice a year—after a healthcare facility makes repairs following the first round of monthly testing. Regarding hospital exit signs, ASHE is considering whether signs on emergency power and in buildings that are occupied 24 hours a day might not need monthly testing. The organization’s theory is that maintenance staff should quickly notice if lights or exit signs are not working.

With many healthcare facilities facing ongoing budget issues, and with more tests and inspections piling up, ASHE is seeking actual testing-data results on elevator-recall testing and exit-sign inspections that might show they can safely be done less frequently.
