Police shoot man who escaped from police custody during medical visit at L.A. hospital

Los Angeles police shot and wounded a man who had escaped from custody during an examination September 28 at the University of Southern California's medical campus in the Boyle Heights section of the city, according to a report from the Los Angeles Times.
According to the report, the shooting occurred after officers chased the man, who stole an SUV that crashed into a tree outside USC's School of Pharmacy at around 3:30 p.m.
The man, identified as Freddy Bailon, 36, was hospitalized and undergoing medical treatment after the shooting, according to the report, which said the man had been escorted from jail to the medical center for an examination. At some point during the medical visit, he broke free from police and ran from the building.
As officers chased Bailon, he stole a black SUV, the Times reported, and at one point officers shot him, leading to the crash of the SUV. No other injuries were reported.
