Two nurses are recovering after they were stabbed July 14 by a patient at Physicians Regional Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee, according to a report from WKRN-TV.
Gary Michael Smallwood, 40, was charged with two counts of attempted first degree murder by police after he reportedly attacked the nurses with a pair of scissors and a knife. The incident occurred at around 6:30 a.m. on the second floor of the central wing of the hospital, according to the report.
One male and one female nurse were injured, the report said, and both are expected to make a full recovery, the report said.
According to the report, Smallwood was admitted to the hospital July 13 after police say he appeared to suffer from a personal medical condition at the Knoxville Greyhound bus station. Officers said Smallwood was being belligerent and had requested to be transported to the hospital. Officials quoted in the report say they are unsure what motivated Smallwood to attack staff.
