It’s been almost four full years since unimaginable disaster struck the city of Joplin, Missouri, and the community there is set to welcome its brand new hospital.
Mercy Joplin will open its doors to business in March, and it's slated to be a state-of-the-art facility, one that was built to stand up to the weather forces that tore apart its predecessor, St. John's Hospital.
The new facility will follow a staggered opening process, Farnen says, beginning with a concert and a gala in a downtown hotel and a grand opening event for the community at the hospital on March 7. On March 14, the hospitals will have a memorial service for workers which starts at the old hospital property and a new memorial park that features an open-air chapel Mercy built for the community on the original site. After a memorial walk from the old campus to the new one, there will be a mass and dedications at the new hospital before patients and doctors move in to their new home from March 14-29. Some workers have been training at the new facility since February.
