The California Nurses Association is pushing new legislation in that state’s senate that would require stronger workplace violence prevention programs after two nurses were stabbed last weekend in separate incidents in the Los Angeles area, reports the Sacramento Business Journal.
In one incident at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center in Sylmar, Calif. early Sunday morning, a man made it past a weapons screening center and stabbed a nurse in the upper body. Then, several hours later a man walked into Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, and stabbed a nurse in the ear, the paper reported.
In the new legislation introduced by state Sen. Alex Padilla, hospitals would be required to have systems to improve hospital security and staffing, and would be required to provide education and training programs to help workers recognize and respond to violent incidents. In addition, hospitals would be prohibited from retaliating against workers who seek help from law enforcement. Further, incidents of violence would require reporting to California’s state OSHA agency and posting on the state’s public website, the Journal reported.
According to the report, similar legislation introduced last year was stalled due to opposition from the hospital industry.
