Emergency Management Tip: Don’t "over engineer" your EOP

Emergency Management Alert, February 23, 2010

The degree of granularity you use in your emergency operations plan should be based on providing two things:

  • Appropriate response
  • Operational flexibility

You can pre-engineer response plans to a degree that can make it very difficult to make quick adjustments as events evolve (or as the case may be, devolve). A basic set of response guidelines for various circumstances is a good way to start. Then you can monitor performance as you have applicable emergencies, making changes as necessary in classic performance improvement fashion.
