Emergency Management Tip: Joint Commission critical areas

The Joint Commission has defined a number of critical areas for hospitals to manage during an emergency response, regardless of the type of event. They include:

  • Communication
  • Resources and assets
  • Safety and security
  • Staff roles and responsibilities
  • Utilities management
  • Patient and clinical support activities

The Joint Commission’s requirements align with federal guidance. Emergency management coordinators should review Joint Commission materials in addition to federal agency resource specific to emergency preparedness.
