Two patient escapes in different parts of the country resulted in police chases over the past seven days:
  • Last Friday, a woman in police custody who was awaiting a drug test at Unity Health Center in Shawnee, OK, escaped her exam room and allegedly stole an ambulance, according to The Oklahoman of Oklahoma City, OK. A police officer had left her alone in the room after it appeared she passed out. The ambulance was running and unlocked at the time. The suspect eventually stopped the ambulance in Del City, OK, and was arrested by police.
  • On Tuesday, a psychiatric patient who was in an ambulance outside of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston awaiting transfer to another facility fled the ambulance, allegedly jumped into a nearby bread delivery truck, and led police on a chase up an interstate, said The Eagle-Tribune of Lawrence, MA. The suspect drove the truck to his home in North Andover, MA, in which he barricaded himself for two hours before a SWAT team member subdued him.
