Emergency Management Tip: Perimeter and crowd control

Emergency Management Alert, December 8, 2009

A large event can result in a surge of casualties, so crowd control measures are critical. As soon as your facility receives notification of an event, part of the hospital's initial response must be to establish a buffer zone in front of the emergency department so that you have room to setup equipment and can facilitate an orderly process of sorting casualties.

Remember to use the following equipment to help crowd control:

  • Hazard tape
  • Traffic cones
  • Barricades or gates
  • Voice amplification equipment (i.e., bullhorn or mobile public address system)
