National Weather Service offers new hurricane information

Emergency Management Alert, June 9, 2009

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Weather Service hurricane center has announced that new tools will be used to better inform the public about hurricane risk, reports the Advocate.

The tools used will better show potential impact of wind, coastal flooding, tornados, and inland flooded associated with each storm. This move comes as the National Hurricane Center is moving away from using the commonly used scale with a category rating of 1 through 5, a scale that relies heavily on wind strength, but not on the potential of flooding or how large an area the storm will cover, according to the Advocate.
