Congress to consider safe patient lifting law

OSHA Healthcare Connection, May 26, 2009

Third time might be a charm for supporters of a national safe patient handling and lifting law.

Rep. John Conyers Jr., D-Michigan, introduced the Nurse and Health Care Worker Protection Act of 2009 (H.R. 2381) on May 13. Conyers has twice introduced similar bills to Congress, but those efforts were during the Bush administration where there was less likelihood for passage.

H.R. 2381 calls for OSHA to promulgate a standard within two years that would apply to all healthcare employers.
