Police arrested a man who reportedly impersonated a cop at a Virginia hospital last week.

The suspect was allegedly wearing a bullet-proof vest and carrying a handgun as he escorted two elderly relatives inside Augusta Medical Center in Fisherville, VA, according to The News Leader of Staunton, VA.

For reasons not made clear by authorities, security officers at the hospital questioned the man, who allegedly told them he was a sheriff’s deputy. When he was unable to produce proper law enforcement identification, he placed the gun in his vehicle, The News Leader reported.

The hospital later contacted the county sheriff’s office, which tracked down the suspect at his home and arrested him. The man denied he told security officers he was a cop.
