Hurricane warning system needs update

Emergency Management Alert, May 5, 2009

U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) urged forecasters and federal, state, and local emergency managers on Friday to consider new ways to update the nation’s emergency warning system, according to the Miami Herald.

While technology in tracking natural disasters has become increasingly more advanced, the warning system has been limited to radio, TV, newspapers, and in some cases the internet.

Currently Diaz-Balart is drafting a bill which would push FEMA to develop of a system to work across platforms such as Twitter or text messaging.
