Q&A: Patients and sharps disposal

OSHA Healthcare Connection, April 7, 2009

Q: I know this is outside the workplace safety realm, but a patient asked how he should properly dispose of insulin needles?

A: Home disposal of sharps in regular trash in a sturdy bleach bottle or coffee can is still legal in many states, but the EPA and The Coalition for Safe Community Needle Disposal strongly recommend self-injectors to use alternative disposal methods.
