Compared to The Joint Commission’s lengthy fire protection requirements, the life safety standards from new accreditor Det Norske Veritas (DNV) are brief.

Part of this contrast results from DNV’s provisions being more open-ended and tending to broadly group requirements under single standards. But facility managers will experience a difference between the accreditors during surveys too, says Randy Snelling, CPEO, chief physical environment officer at DNV Healthcare in Cincinnati. “There’s been 40 years of ‘gotcha’ [from The Joint Commission],” Snelling says. “We don’t play the gotcha game ... this is about improving your hospital.”
