Santa’s work may be finished for the year, but HIM directors should have their own list, and may need to check it more than twice, to ensure they’re ready for 2014.
While training and implementation milestones for ICD-10 will be a major focus for facilities throughout the year, they must also make sure to update chargemasters to incorporate all of the changes for 2014.
The CPT® Manual has 335 changes for 2014, including new, deleted, and revised codes. Facilities need to have the latest codes updated in their chargemaster. HIM Directors and coding supervisors need to make sure that coders are aware of the major changes to the codes and guidelines. In addition to checking that prices have been updated along with the codes, HIM directors have to make sure that the cost accounts for all services included in the CPT code. As more services are packaged together, it’s critical that facilities report the proper costs so that when CMS uses charge data from the previous two years to set future rates, it represents accurate costs for your facility.
One facility is not likely to have a major impact on rates, but if each doesn’t take the time now to incorporate all of the changes implemented for 2014, reimbursement problems could develop in the future that affect the entire industry.
