The ACGME recently released its report detailing the findings of the Pursuing Excellence in Clinical Learning Environments Pathway Leaders Patient Safety Collaborative, which aims to find ways to increase resident and fellow engagement in improving patient safety.
The collaborative of nine sponsoring institutions designed and tested new approaches to improve patient safety in GME clinical learning environments (CLE). Based on surveys with participants, the ACGME identified lessons that emerged from the collaborative's efforts, including:
- Invest time to establish process that CLE leadership and GME can use to ensure residents and fellows are actively involved with addressing patient safety events
- Incorporate various interprofessional team member and their perspectives when analyzing patient safety events to enhance learning and team function
- Initiate patient safety education during residents’ and fellows’ first year to ensure they are knowledgeable throughout the duration of their programs
