The highest-paid medical residents

The average medical resident salary in 2020 was $63,400, according to Medscape’s latest report on residents’ salaries and debt. This is up from the average salary of $61,200 reported in the 2019 report.
Nearly 1,700 residents from more than 30 specialties were surveyed for the report. The highest-paying specialties were allergy and immunology, hematology, plastic surgery/aesthetic medicine, rheumatology, and surgery specialized with an average annual salary of $69,500. Family medicine had the lowest-paid residents with an average annual salary of $58,500.
Fifty-seven percent of the surveyed residents felt they were not fairly compensated. When asked about their reasons for their dissatisfaction, 81% responded that their compensation doesn’t reflect the number of hours they work and 77% thought their compensation was not comparable to other medical staff, such as physician assistants and nurses.
