Efforts to increase involvement in GME by racially marginalized groups can be disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic so institutions must bolster their commitment to a diverse program, according to the AMA.
To advocate long-term changes in medical education, the AMA released recommendations to decrease the underlying inequities that may be barriers to marginalized groups. Those recommendations for residency programs include:
- Increasing monitoring of resident well-being and minimizing barriers to mental healthcare
- Mitigating bias in the residency selection processes with bias training for interviewers
- Implementing robust outreach to candidates from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds to improve communication in the residency selection processes
- Engaging with residents and faculty from underrepresented backgrounds when adjusting curriculum, assessment, and application processes
