Neurological surgery, physical medicine and rehab, and plastic surgery (integrated) were the most competitive specialties among PGY1 residents, according to an analysis by The DO of the National Resident Matching Program’s (NRMP) 2020 Match report.

The DO examined the Match report to see which specialties filled all or nearly all their PGY1 positions to determine their competitiveness, excluding those with fewer than 50 positions and those that are combined specialties. One-hundred percent of the PGY1 positions offered in neurological surgery, physical medicine and rehab, and plastic surgery (integrated) were filled. Those were followed by anesthesiology, which filled 99.9% of its positions and obstetrics-gynecology, which filled 99.8%.

The DO also examined the NRMP’s Match report to find the most competitive specialties among residents matching at the PGY2 level. Anesthesiology was the most competitive with 99.5% of its positions filled, followed by physical medicine and rehab with 98.7%.
