Editor’s note: The following is an edited excerpt from Residency Program Alert’s (RPA) coverage of the 2019 Residency Coordinator Salary Survey, which can be accessed in the RPA archive here. Not an RPA member? Click here for more information about becoming an RPA subscriber.
Since 2007, RPA has conducted a survey of residency coordinators nationwide and provided them with data to see how their experiences stack up against each other. The most common job title among survey takers in recent years is residency program coordinator and the 2019 results were no different, garnering 30% of responses (see Figure 5).
Notably, the percentage of respondents with the title administrative assistant has fallen by 3 percentage points from 2017, while other titles containing “manager” and “administrator” are on the rise.
This year, just as in 2017, 24% of respondents selected “other” as their title. They specified a wide variety of titles, including academic services administrator, recruitment coordinator, and medical education team leader. This large pool of job titles indicates the evolving nature of the residency program coordinator’s position as well as the diversity of responsibilities entrusted to a coordinator.
Respondents who chose “other” were asked to type in their title when taking the survey. A word cloud was generated using their responses (see Figure 6).
