Average resident salary increases

The average residency salary has increased by 7% over the past three years, according to a survey of more than 1,900 residents.
Data from Medscape’s Residents Salary & Debt Report shows that the average resident salary in 2018 is $59,300, up from $57,200 in 2017. This continues the upward trend seen in 2016 when the average resident salary was $56,500 and 2015 when residents earned $55,400.
Allergy and immunology residents were the highest-paid, earning an average of $68,000. They were followed by rheumatology residents ($66,200) and specialized surgery residents ($66,100). On the lower end of the pay scale were residents specializing in family medicine ($55,900) and public health and preventative medicine ($55,500).
