Finding that many fourth-year medical students lacked proficiency in a number of soft skills, 71 training institutions recently piloted a weeklong boot camp for those who would be transitioning to surgical residency programs.
The voluntary boot camp, which was developed through a partnership with the American College of Surgeons, the Association of Program Directors in Surgery, and the Association for Surgical Education, mainly focuses on nontechnical skills, such as effective teamwork, time management, and resiliency and wellness.
The boot camp also covers other critical skills residents need during the first week of training, such as emergency procedures, handoffs, communication, informed consent, and dealing with difficult patients.
