According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, women accounted for 82% of physicians matching into OB-GYN residency programs in 2016. Now for the sake of diversity, some programs are taking steps to recruit male physicians.
Although patients tend to prefer female OB-GYNs, WFAE News spoke to female OB-GYN residents who said they liked the balance men bring to the work environment. Some programs have even made efforts to recruit men to the field. Ashlyn Savage, MD, of Medical University of South Carolina, said she might consider a male applicant with lower board scores to increase the number of men interviewed for a position. However, she questions the importance of prioritizing gender diversity over racial or ethnic diversity.
