While the average debt among medical students in 20 specialties is up, the rate of students graduating with no debt is also rising, according to a letter published in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Researchers studied trends in responses from the 2010-2016 Association of American Medical College Gradation Questionnaires and found a reduction in the percent of students in all specialties graduating with debt. This reduction also varied widely depending on specialty. During the time frame, neurosurgery students with debt decreased by 17%, while family medicine dropped by only 4%.
