One-third of residents say maintaining a work-life balance is their biggest challenge during residency, according to Medscape’s latest Residents Lifestyle and Happiness Report. This is the third year in a row in which work-life balance was cited as the most challenging aspect of residency.
According to survey responses from more than 1,500 residents across 25 specialties, nearly one-fifth of residents cited dealing with the pressures and demands on time as their biggest challenge, while 12% thought it was the fear of failure or making a serious mistake. Other top challenges cited were debt (11%), developing the clinical skills required for their specialty (11%), and dealing with stress (8%).
