A record number of medical school students and graduates applied for residency positions this year, according to the National Resident Matching Program. Nearly 36,000 applicants competed for 31,757 positions. The number of first-year positions also hit a new record of 28,849.
Although the number of U.S. citizen international medical school students and graduates (IMG) who applied to programs declined by about 250 from last year, the percentage that matched to positions was the highest match rate since 2004 at 55%. The number of non-U.S. citizen IMGs who applied also declined by nearly 7,500 but their 52% match rate was the highest since 2005.
