The years young physicians spend in residency often coincide with the time they begin starting their families. While taking on two life-changing responsibilities at once can seem overwhelming, many residents choose to meet those challenges head on. Chelsea Slade, MD, recently shared her experience of having children during medical school and residency with AMA Wire. To help other physicians in training avoid stress while growing their families, Slade shared the following tips:
• Plan well and communicate your plans to your medical school advisors and residency coordinator
• Get your Family and Medical Leave Act and short-term disability paperwork, finances, health insurance, and rainy-day fund in order early
• Go out on dates regularly so you don’t fall into a rut of just child care and work
