In order to reform GME, key inhibitors and areas of concern must be identified. The Association of Academic Health Centers recently held seven roundtable discussions nationwide with representatives from medical associations; accreditation bodies; hospital, insurance, and provider systems; and other organizations involved with GME. During the roundtable discussions, several themes emerged that participants said will need to be addressed to reform GME. These included:
- Organizational conflicts between teaching hospitals that receive the most Medicare GME funding and the medical schools responsible for the teaching and accreditation of programs
- Concerns about the mental health and wellness of residents
- Revising the program and accreditation structure
- Insufficient workforce planning and analyses to achieve a successful GME strategy
