Residents have a number of responsibilities to juggle yet a growing number are choosing to start families during training. Researchers surveyed nearly 650 residents at three Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education academic sites in Arizona, Florida, and Minnesota to gain a better understanding of this trend.
Of the survey respondents, 41% had children and 7% were pregnant. Of those with children, three-quarters of the pregnancies occurred during residency and about one-third said they planned on having another child during their current training program. Among those without children, 30% of women and 32% of men planned on having a child during their current training program.
