With so few young physicians are training to be geriatricians, states with large populations of adults age 65 and older are finding themselves unprepared to meet the needs of its residents. According to Kaiser Health News, there are 130 geriatric fellowship programs nationwide with 383 positions. This year only 192 positions were filled.
One of the hardest hit states is West Virginia, which has the third oldest population in the country, after Maine and Florida. For the past three years, no physicians have enrolled in any of the states four geriatric fellowship programs.
