Physicians in training may want to consider going into pediatrics, anesthesiology, obstetrics, or orthopedic surgery if they’d like to live in Hawaii. Each year, the Hawaii Physician Workforce Assessment Project prepares a report that assesses the supply and demand of physicians on each of Hawaii’s islands and those were the specialties identified as the most in need on the Big Island.
Statewide there are 20% fewer physicians than are required based on population needs. However, on the Big Island the shortage is even higher at just above 50%. The island’s population needs 286 specialist but only have 137.
