During the period in the residency recruitment process after the interviews have been conducted and before programs submit their rank order lists, many applicants will reach out to the program but there is little evidence this actually improves their ranking, according to a study published in the Journal of Graduate Medical Education.
The researchers surveyed program directors about these post-interview communications and found that 94% of respondents reported receiving communications from applicants following their interviews. However, only 5.2% said they always or usually move applicants up in rank order if the applicants says they will rank the program first on their own lists.
