A report written by the AMA’s Council on Medical Education and adopted recently at the 2015 AMA Interim Meeting offers suggestions for programs seeking additional funding to increase their number of residency training positions. The report suggests that programs:
• Research state funding possibilities to see how Medicaid funds are allocated and if they support GME funding. In states with their own health insurance exchanges, taxes on the exchanges could possibly go toward GME programs.
• Search for philanthropic organizations and insurance company foundations that provide support for economic development or healthcare.
• Partner with local large employers, large hospitals, or healthcare systems who may find it in their best interest to have an adequate pipeline of physicians in the area..
