Investigators at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, found that about 70% of its medical residents met the criteria for burnout.

Residents from all specialties were asked to complete a voluntary survey that included the Maslach Burnout Inventory. The specialties reporting the highest percentage of burned out residents were general surgery (89%) and radiology (85%). Pediatrics was the lowest with 46% and was the only specialty reporting less than 50%.
