During HCPro’s recent webcast, The Residency Coordinator’s Path to Leadership, Patti D. Davison, BGS, chair of the American Residency Coordinators in Obstetrics & Gynecology and education coordinator for the department of OB-GYN at East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine, answered several questions from the audience. See one of Davison’s responses below and click here to order the presentation on demand.

Q: Is it better for residents to think of you as a friend or as a manager?

Davison: How about a hybrid? You want them to be able to trust you to confide in you when something isn’t quite right, but they also need to understand that we are here to protect their educational integrity. They need to understand that our jobs are not just to order lunch or to run to the bookstore and get the 30-pound textbook that they want. They need to see—and this goes back to the culture of not being just a secretary—the faculty and the program director looking to you for policy interpretation or to investigate clarification on some policy. They need to understand that what we do keeps the program in business, keeps our accreditation going.

What we do also protects their credentialing post-residency. We are the ones who maintain the records so that two or three program directors down the road we can still verify their training because of what we track and how we track it. Our professionalism, our skills, and our organization keeps these documents in order so that future program directors can always verify for their credentialing needs.
