Top specialties among residents vary by gender

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges’ 2015 Report on Residents, a resident’s gender may play a part in which specialty they choose to practice.
The report examined the specialties of more than 86,000 residents in the 2013-2014 class and found the specialties with the largest percentage of female residents were psychiatry (57%), family medicine (58%), pediatrics (75%), and obstetrics/gynecology (85%). Males made up the largest percentage of residents in surgery (59%), emergency medicine (62%), anesthesiology (63%), and radiology (73%).
