A recent study published in Family Medicine confirmed the belief that medical residency graduates tend to practice near where they received their training.
Using data from the 2012 American Medical Association Masterfile and the American Academy of Family Physicians membership file, researchers determined that 55% of family physicians were practicing within 100 miles of their family medicine residency program.
The study also determined that 57% of family physicians stay in the same state. Retention percentages vary from state to state. California, Mississippi, and Texas were able to retain the most at about 75% each; while the lowest were Wyoming (27%), Rhode Island (22%), and the District of Columbia (15%).
