Legislative bills filed in the Washington Senate and House this week seek to remove a provision in state law that gives the University of Washington (UW) the exclusive right to offer medicine as an academic major. The bills, if passed, would support Washington State University’s (WSU) plan to start its own medical school.
Last October, the two universities announced the end of their medical education partnership after WSU announced its proposal to open its own medical school in Spokane. The two universities will now compete for funding from the Legislature. Neither of the bills address the finances for the two medical schools.
