St. Mary’s Health System of Athens, Georgia, recently briefed the University System of Georgia Board of Regents on its plan to admit its first 10 residents to its new internal medicine residency program.
More than 1,300 medical students applied for the 10 new residency positions but only 100 will be interviewed. Seventy of those candidates have some ties to the state. The 10 residents will begin their training in July.
The Board of Regents appropriated $550,000 to match funds raised by the hospital to build the infrastructure needed for the residency program. The University System has provided financial assistance to several other hospitals with the goal of establishing 400 additional residency slots in the state.
