The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) is a step closer to having its own medical school this week after its board approved the accreditation application that will be sent to the Liaison Committee for Medical Education.

If UVI receives accreditation, it would be the Caribbean’s only U.S. accredited English-speaking medical school and could open as soon as the fall of 2016.

UVI first announced its plan to develop a medical school in April and hired Benjamin Sachs, the former dean of Tulane University School of Medicine, as interim dean. UVI also received a $30 million gift from New Generation Power to fund the school’s development.
