Annual resident salary and debt report released

The average U.S. medical resident salary is $55,300, according to a survey of nearly 1,300 medical resident. The figure was released this week in Medscape’s annual Resident Salary & Debt Report.
Among the report’s other notable statistics, it stated that residents in the Northwest had the highest average salary of $71,000, followed by the Northeast with $61,000. Residents in the Southeast trailed behind all other regions with an average salary of $50,000.
Thirty-six percent of residents have more than $200,000 in medical school debt after five years of residency, according the report. Conversely, a quarter of respondents reported having no debt at all.
