The budgetary restraints of many institutions can affect the number of individuals who are available to help you manage your residency program. Although the ACGME requires the institution and the program to provide adequate technical, clerical, and professional personnel to manage the residency, there will always be variables. For example, expect to have a full-time resident coordinator, but there is no standard for the number of clerical personnel you need/have.
Alert your department chair whenever you encounter deficiencies in the number of personnel allotted to your program. Remember, because many departmental budgets do not have the flexibility to hire additional personnel, you may have difficulty advocating for new full-time positions.
This tip is from The Residency Program Director’s Handbook, by Robert V. Higgins, MD.
